Propositions of Developmental Rehabilitation |
The concept of developmental rehabilitation was created by Professor Hellbruegge as tertiary prevention to prevent or reduce handicap. The secret of success of this concept of developmental rehabilitation is based on two findings:
the unique plasticity of the developing child, especially of its central nervous system, which gives it the special ability to adapt and change
the conclusion that the parents take over therapy and not the paediatrician or those working in paediatric auxiliary professions. The parents also play a decisive part in the early detection of developmental arrears.
1st Proposition In early childhood there is a unique chance to save children with innate or early-acquired damage or disorders from suffering the fate of life-long disability.
4th Proposition In developmental rehabilitation, various specialists, under the coordination of a paediatrician, have the task of introducing the parents in minute steps to a comprehensible programme of early treatment so that they can perform it at home.
2nd Proposition Developmental rehabilitation means early detection, early treatment and early social integration in families, kindergartens and schools of children suffering from disorders or damage of any kind who may thus be handicapped.
5th Proposition Putting children in special schools enhances their handicap. The joint education of children with multiple and diverse handicaps– as well as so-called mentally handicapped children – with non-handicapped children encourages the social development and thus the speech development of handicapped and non-handicapped children. |
3th Proposition In the early detection of developmental arrears of all kinds, the parents are superior to all professionals, including doctors, psychologists, therapists, etc. They are also the best therapists. |
6st Proposition The key to the success of a joint education of handicapped and non-handicapped children is the phrase: "Only those who help become independent and happy" (Hellbruegge). |
